Monsters and Their Mad Scientists

Many monsters live at Monster Mini Golf Medford under the watch of their caring scientists. This brings to mind many famous creatures created in the labs of mad scientists.  Perhaps the most famous creature is the one most people call Frankenstein. However, Frankenstein was not his name after all.  Here's a bit of Frankenstein lore for you.

It was Dr. Frankenstein who created a monster in his lab.  The monster actually was not given a name in the novel written by Mary Shelley. Dr. Victor Frankenstein was obsessed in his search to discover the secret of life.  After many years of research, he thought he had the answer and began to build his creation.  He combined body parts from corpses and used electricity to start the heart.  He did it!  He created life!  But when he looked at the monster, he was horrified.

Dr. Frankenstein left his home in despair.  When he returned, the monster was gone.  The two cross paths later on and the monster tells Dr. Frankenstein that he is desperately lonely and begs the Dr. to create a creature as hideous as he is so that he may have a companion.  Denied at first, the monster is eloquent and persuades the Dr.

Dr. Frankenstein begins building a female creature, but becomes frightened by the monster and destroys his second creation. The two once again go their separate ways.  The Dr. attempts to capture the monster, but is unsuccessful.

The end of the novel brings the death of Dr. Frankenstein and the grief of the monster. The monster is left alone and with the death of his creator feels he can finally die as well.  The story ends with the monster traveling North to die.

Dr. Frankenstein is a great story of a mad scientist.  The monster is not a monster at all.  Just a lonely, misunderstood creature trying to find a place for himself in the world he was brought into.

Do It Yourself Glow-In-The-Dark Fun

Monster Mini Golf Medford customers tell us all the time that our glow-in-the-dark decor adds a huge element of fun to their mini golf outing. So we thought we would share some simple experiments that you can do at home to have fun with a black light.

1.  Have you ever used invisible ink to send secret messages?  Here is a way to write an invisible message to a friend, as long as they have a black light available to read it!

For this experiment you will need:
  • a black light
  • petroleum jelly
  • a piece of paper
Dip your finger into the petroleum jelly.  The jelly will act as a kind of invisible ink.  Use your jelly covered finger to write a message on the piece of paper.  Now turn off the room lights and turn on the black light.  Can you see your message?

2.  Do you enjoy scary stories?  All of us at Monster Mini Golf Medford sure do!  Imagine how fun it would be to tell scary stories in the dark .... with glowing hands!

For this experiment you will need:

  • a black light
  • petroleum jelly
  • OPTIONAL:  if you do not want to get your hands greasy, you can use plastic/rubber gloves
If you're using gloves, put them on first.  Then cover both hands completely with petroleum jelly. Now it's time for lights out!  Have someone turn on a black light and you're good to go.  How spooky when the only thing that can be seen are your floating hands!

We hope you have as much fun with these do it yourself glow-in-the-dark ideas as we did!  Be sure to let us know!
